As a drinks connoisseur, James Bond 007, or Britain's most famous MI6 spy, is most famous for his consumption of martinis. Shaken, not stirred. However, this is not James Bond's only favourite drink. It also holds a special place in his heart coffee beans!
Does James Bond drink coffee beans?
The first were, of course, Ian Fleming's books, but it was not until a series of films by production duo Broccoli & Salzman that Her Majesty's Agent became a global pop culture hero.
A spy, a ruthless assassin (he murders perfectly legally, as the two zeros in 007 represent a licence to kill), but also a worldly man, a lover of beautiful women and fast cars, or vice versa. I could never remember which is which, but as far as James Bond is concerned it doesn't really matter, because both versions are correct. Seducing the greatest beauties comes as easily and gracefully to him as driving supercars.
And a lover of liquor. And not just the exuberant kind, because whether it's for breakfast or on duty at night, he drinks coffee.
For breakfast, usually two large unsweetened ones brewed in American Chemex coffee machine made from roasted coffee beans purchased from the now defunct (but very much in Ian Fleming's lifetime) De Bry shop in New Oxford Street, London.
W "Goldfinger" Fleming described the following scene from James' night duty at the Secret Service headquarters building:
'On the first night the girl from the canteen brought tea. Bond looked at her dryly. 'I don't drink tea. Tea clouds the air. What's more, tea was one of the main reasons for the fall of the British Empire. Be so good and make me a coffee." The girl giggled and rushed to spread Bondaw's words to the canteen. He has been getting coffee ever since, and the saying 'cup of mule' has circulated throughout the Commons."
So, of hot drinks, James Bond only prefers strong coffee, while tea is a matter of... disregard.
Apart from brewed coffee, what does James Bond drink?
Apart from the aforementioned martini, he used to indulge in champagne, bourbon, whisky, vodka, wine, rum, cognac, gin or beer. He was therefore a high-spirited alcoholic and in no way a role model. With the lifestyle he led he would have been an impotent man suffering from cirrhosis of the liver. Fortunately, he is a fictional character, but it is obvious that we do not act like Mr James. We don't kill people, we don't drive against traffic on narrow one-way streets at 150 km/h, we don't pat our girlfriends on the bottom whenever we feel like it and we don't drink as many drinks as 007.
Coffee, and preferably freshly roasted coffee beans ok. We can drink more coffee, also in moderation of course, but the most important thing is that it is of good quality. Preferably brewed from beans purchased from our favourite coffee roasting plant in Warsaw.
James Bond coffee beans
James's most famous drink is, of course, the Vesper (for details, see the first Bond book i.e. "Casino Royale"). But, for example, when preparing for a hike in the "For your eyes only" in a canteen he had brewed himself a coffee mixed with bourbon at a ratio of 1/4 to 3/4 (yes, you read that right - coffee to taste).
A drink prepared for this mania, but in slightly different proportions, is called the Coffee Cobbler and is prepared as follows.
Ingredients for a drink with coffee beans
30 ml of bourbon, rum or cognac
15 ml strong espresso
a teaspoon each of orange liqueur and lemon juice
sugar syrup or sugar
Preparation
Fill the glass up to 3/4 full with ice
Add all ingredients
Stir for 30 seconds
Add ice on top
Garnish with an orange disc and a sprig of mint
Coffee bean-based drink (without alcohol)
And for the non-alcoholic version, I offer James Bond lovers the following Espresso Tonic.
Ingredients for Espresso Tonic
a few ice cubes
150 - 200 ml of tonic
30 ml strong espresso
slice of orange or piece of lime peel
Preparation
Put ice cubes in a glass, pour in the tonic, add espresso, garnish with an orange slice or lime zest.
Enjoy!
